         SPEED
Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi
Music: Imai Hisashi

I stick my index finger into my temple, and blast off
My head's always just barely biting down on the pills*
I'll dive off skyscrapers without hesitation

Tonight again, you could just barely see through my head, to my bones
No more peace and quiet, I'm off to this evening's accomplices

Girls, boys, once and for all, pain and tears
Grow easy in your numbed body
Be a butterfly, be a flower, something's waiting for you**
Say goodbye to everything you love

—I was the only one who got off on it, you're a little bit of a prude—**

Increasing my speed, I'll dive off the skyscrapers
Raising the volume, I'm off to this evening's accomplices

Girls, boys, freedom suits you
This is our last chance, let's blow ourselves up****
Be a butterfly, be a flower, it's gorgeous—you're the cosmos
Hold everything you love close to your heart
You're the cosmos

When I awaken today, I'm once again in the cold glass case of the moonlit night
Tonight again, you could just barely see through my head, to my bones

Note: I know some people are really bothered by the lyrics to this song for its suicidal references. I don't know why, but I actually have a theory that this song is about being high on speed...I think the jumping off skyscrapers is more an evocation of the state of mind of being high, so maybe you don't have to worry after all. But if the thought of Sakurai having tried speed bothers you, worry away (though I'd wait for the song "Heroin," personally.)
*The Japanese music industry sure does love to censor references to drugs in songs. The word "pill" was censored out in the original lyric booklet, as well as on all the recordings, but, as ever, the live performances gave it away. But I dunno what they were on about, seems like Sakurai had a headache, so isn't he entitled to some aspirin?
**This line is a reference to a song called "Dou ni mo Tomaranai," ("It Just Won't Stop") with lyrics by Aku Yuu and music by Tokura Shin'ichi, originally performed by the Japanese singer Yamamoto Linda. In the song, Linda sings "Ah, chou ni nare, ah hana ni nare" ("Ah, be a butterfly, ah, be a flower"). Interestingly, this song was also referred to in Dir en grey's song "audrey." Also, Aku Yuu, who wrote the lyrics to this song, also wrote the lyrics to "LOVE -Dakishimetai-," which Sakurai covered for his solo project (for a translation see the Sakurai section.)
***This line is written entirely in katakana in the original lyrics, so I put it in italics in English to preserve the original look a bit.
****The word here, "jibaku," means "suicide bomb." However, once again, I think this is much more figurative than it is literal. Sakurai is so high he'd like to just explode. Also, during recent live shows, he's often changed the words and sung "let's make love," instead of "let's blow ourselves up." He might have been trying to express a sort of peace-and-love sentiment, instead of calling to mind images of the current situation in the Middle East, but his change in the lyrics also made me think of how many times he's used explosion imagery when referring to sex, and also how many times he's written lyrics incorporating the thought "let's make love now because we're going to die soon." No, I'm not looking for sexual imagery where there isn't any, I'm just trying to reassure people that there is no reason to be excessively worried over the meaning of this lyric.

         Narcissus
Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi
Music: Hoshino Hidehiko

If I could dance, I’d do it as though cursed
If I could drown, I’d do it like Narcissus

Ah…who is that beautiful red growing wet for?
Ah…what I want is a body with no heart

If I could go mad, I’d stick with the primary colors
My universe is in my locked-up room

Ah, I trace my loins with my fingers
Ah, even though I’m dissolving, it’s so easy to feel the pleasure

All alone, just like this, I’m kissing my own body reflected in the mirror
The only thing I love is myself
Naked, I dance

Ah…someone’s shadow brings me so low
Ah…only turn your back if it dries up

All alone, just like this, I confess my love to the mirror
The only thing I love is myself
Naked, I dance

Note: This whole song is a reference to a story from Greek mythology about a beautiful young man named Narcissus. There are many versions of this story, but they all run something like this: Narcissus was incredibly beautiful, and thus many people (both men and women) wanted him as a lover. However, he would have none of them and cruelly spurned them all. Finally, one of the spurned lovers cursed Narcissus, wishing that someday he would know as much pain as they did. The curse came true when one day, while out hunting, Narcissus happened to catch a glimpse of his reflection in a forest pool. He was entranced by the beauty of the person he saw in the pool, not realizing it was himself. But when he bent to kiss his reflection, the water rippled, and he finally realized the truth, at which point he was so overcome he either drowned himself in the pool, stabbed himself, or wasted away staring at his own reflection, depending on the version of the story you read. Despite his failings, he had been so beautiful in life that the Gods took pity on him and turned his dead body into a beautiful flower, which is known today as a Narcissus, after him. This story is also where the term “narcissism” comes from. Obviously, the character in this song is having an experience much like that of Narcissus.
