*This line is so full of double meanings it is almost impossible to translate. First, “utsusemi” means cicada, but it also means “real world,” or “man of the world.” However, in this line and the first line of the second stanza, though Sakurai sings “utsusemi,” the kanji that are written are not the kanji for “utsusemi,” but rather the kanji for “real person.”
Second, the word “doshaburi ame” means “downpour” or “cloudburst,” and I have translated it as such. However, Sakurai spells the “buri” part of “doshaburi” with the kanji for “pretense.”
Third, the word “cry” this line is not “cry” in the sense of shedding tears, but rather “cry” in the way that a cicada would cry—that is, making a noise. (Japanese cicadas have to be the loudest insects on the planet. They don’t so much cry as scream;;;)
